School Gardens: Sharing Successes and Best Practices
Join teachers, school volunteers and parents in a one-day conference at the University of California Botanical Garden in a roundtable of activities to share successes and learn new best practices in Bay Area School gardens.
YOU'LL GAIN
* Skill at identifying native bees and other pollinators in your garden, and the opportunity to involve your students in a long term UC research project.
* Practical knowledge and skills about gardening and maintaining your school garden with ease and success. Topics include but are not limited to composting, planting, watering, and plant selection.
* Firsthand experience with effective, inquiry-based botanical units for integrating curriculum into school gardens. You may choose from two of the following workshops:
"Botany on Your Plate" (For grades 2-3)
Students investigate plants we eat to learn the structure and function of different plant parts through a series of hands-on nutritional and plant explorations and planting activities.
"Biodiversity in Habitats Around You!" (For grades 4-7)
Students learn about environmental limiting factors and the implications of plant adaptations for survival. The activities give students tools and experiences to understand how California habitats are influenced by landforms, rainfall and temperature.
"Math in the Garden" (For grades K-7)
Students reinforce their math skills through engaging, problem solving activities that take place out-of-doors and in the garden.
YOU'LL COLLABORATE
* In teams to identify resources and strategies for linking curriculum to the garden and involving volunteers.
* In small groups to share best practices and ideas for developing and sustaining gardens throughout the year.
YOU'LL RECEIVE
* Activity packets, seeds, and take-home materials that link the garden to math, literature, nutrition and science.
* School garden resource lists.
