The Slow the Flow Program is pleased to offer three, FREE, exciting hands-on outreach presentations: "Reduce, Re-use, Refuge", "Mysteries of Wastewater Treatment", and "Water Drop Dilemmas". "Reduce, Re-use, Refuge" includes a slide show overview of the habitats found at the Refuge located in Alviso. The slide show focuses on how our human actions have or can impact local habitats. The presentation then explores one habitat in particular -- the one into which the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant releases its fresh water effluent. Students use hydrometers and habitat samples to determine what effect the fress wastewater is having on the salty slough. Presentation requires a slide projector and the ability to have the students work in groups.

"Mysteries of Wastewater Treatment" offers students first-hand experience at cleaning a fake wastewater sample. Students work in groups and use cleaning tools such as filters, sieves and pipettes to mimic wastewater treatment processes. The activity is followed by a slide presentation on the real cleaning process at the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant. Presentation requires an overhead projector and classroom setting that will allow students to work in small groups.

"Water Drop Dilemmas" demonstrates how precious water is as a resource and how little water we have on which to depend. Students will have the opportunity develop pieces of land that make up a larger watershed drawing. They then see the impacts of their development decisions on the composite watershed drawing as well as on a functioning watershed diorama of the South Bay. Presentation requires classroom setting allowing students to work around one large central table. Recommended for classes of 20 or fewer.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society and the City of San Jose have joined forces to offer the Slow the Flow environmental education program at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center in Alviso.
