The Slow the Flow field trip program focuses on the human impact to the salt marsh ecosystem caused by water that has traveled from homes, schools and businesses through the sanitary sewer system and the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) to Artesian Slough on the Refuge and then into the Bay. Students explore the aquatic habitats at the Refuge, gathering information and samples to investigate how our cleaned wastewater is impacting these habitats.

This field trip program is available free of charge to schools in the following Bay Area cities: San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Alviso, Campbell, Saratoga, Monte Sereno, Cupertino and Los Gatos.

Within the Slow the Flow Program are two field trip options:

"Sinks, Sewers and Sloughs" is an all-day field trip at the Refuge consisting of three in-depth science activities that teach about the processes used at the WPCP as well as the chemical and biological impacts of the freshwater effluent from the plant.

The activities are primarily led by the educator, staff from the Environmental Education Center and additional educator-recruited volunteers. Prior to bringing students on a field trip.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society and the City of San Jose have joined forces to offer the Slow the Flow environmental education program at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center in Alviso.
