Building a Presence for Science is a project of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), supported by the ExxonMobil Foundation. Building a Presence (www.nsta.org/bap) aims to reduce the isolation of classroom science teachers, and provide them with science teaching resources and professional development opportunities. A consortium of California science organizations has been funded by NSTA to implement this project in California. Lead organizations are WestEd, California Department of Education, California Science Teachers Association, K-12 Alliance (CSIN, SPAN, SS&C), and California Science Project.
CABAP (www.cabap.org) aims to:
* Establish a statewide network of approximately 300 Key Leaders;
* Enlist at least one Point of Contact (PoC) for science education per school throughout the state (minimum 6,000 schools);
* Provide resources and professional development for the Key Leaders and Points of Contact.
A Key Leader is a person interested in serving in a leadership position to further science education in the K-12 system.
Key Leaders will:
* Participate in a one-day Key Leader training session.
* Be registered electronically in the NSTA database. Utilize the NSTA database for electronic communications with the CABAP leadership, other Key Leaders, and their Points of Contact. Disseminate information received via NSTA's electronic outreach system.
* Either provide or assist in providing at least one local training targeted for PoCs.
* Receive $500 after completing their primary three-part assignment (participate in a one-day Key Leader training; have at least their minimum assigned number of PoCs registered in the NSTA database; and provide and document a local PoC training).
* Receive a certificate citing their role as a California/NSTA Building a Presence Key Leader.
* Receive and disseminate information and resources. These will include materials developed through CABAP to assist teachers in providing high quality science instruction; electronic messages of interest to California science educators; quarterly issues of Focus magazine from the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse; and 40 copies of the book Dr. Art's Guide to Planet Earth.
* Document their CABAP activities through the on-line system.
A Point of Contact is a classroom teacher who is an advocate and contact person for science in his or her individual school building.
Each Point of Contact will:
* Register electronically in the NSTA database (www.nsta.org/bap).
* Disseminate to other teachers in their school the information/resources received through participating in CABAP.
* Receive resources provided by the statewide leadership and their Key Leader.
* Be encouraged and assisted to participate in a local Building a Presence training.
* Be encouraged and assisted to access the statewide online resources.
