SEP coordinates a paid summer research internship program for students from San Francisco Unified School District High Schools. Each student is placed in a laboratory setting and is paired with a mentor, a UCSF researcher. The student and mentor work together through the summer conducting scientific research. Last summer's interns conducted research projects on many different biomedical topics, including: RNA splicing, Herpes virus transport, genotyping transgenic mice, intracellular signaling pathways, and purification of a protease from the parasite Schistosoma mansoni. Through a weekly seminar series and field trips the students also have the opportunity to: meet with undergraduate interns to discuss applying to college and life at college, tour UC Berkeley's campus and meet with a college admissions counselor, and
visit additional UCSF research labs to introduce them to cutting edge research techniques.

What kind of students are we looking for?
Students who are curious about science, interested in learning and are motivated by project-based experiences. We do not review grades in the application process, rather we look for students who convey their interest and enthusiasm in the internships.
Students for who this opportunity would provide a critical difference in their lives through having: the chance to investigate career options, the chance to experience a university environment, and the chance to have a mentor in a professional field.

To apply, students must be nominated by a science teacher. Each teacher may nominate up to 3 students. The selection process for interns is rigorous: students are initially nominated by their science teacher, they submit a written application, qualified students undergo an interview with SEP staff, and selected students are then sent to interview with mentors. SEP takes care of all the paperwork involved in hiring, insuring, and paying the interns.

Students are drawn from many San Francisco Unified High Schools, and many are interested in exploring careers in the biomedical sciences. Selected students are energetic, curious, and hard working. Spending the summer in a UCSF research lab is a wonderful experience for these students, and sponsoring one of them can be educational and fun for the mentor as well.
