Currently in development, Math in the Garden will be a set of activity guides that bring adults and children (ages 5-14) together in the garden to learn the mathematics inherent in the nature of plants and gardening. The units developed by the project will:
Teach both children and adults mathematics concepts and skills that apply to the real world context of the garden;
Feature plants, flowers and fruits as mathematics manipulatives that appeal to diverse senses;
Promote an active learning mode inherent in gardening activities;
Support the California State and National Standards for mathematics, and the National Science Eudcation Standards.
Activities will include discovering patterns, making predictions, investigating numbers, measuring and comparing, collecting data, delving into geometry, and exploring relationships in real world settings.
The Math in the Garden unit is part of a series of Science/Math Teaching Units that were developed in classrooms with teacher input at every stage and tested in a variety of schools. The units blend curricular content with educational goals in a way that is meaningful to students, teachers and the school community. This collaborative development-strategy has succeeded in producing math/science units with strong links to nutrition, literacy and social sciences.
