Through Biodiversity in Habitats Around You, students in grades 5-7 develop observation and analytical skills that lead to an understanding of: plant adaptations; implications for survival of various adaptations; how landforms influence plant communities; and value of biodiversity in gardens and natural communities.
This unit consists of 7.5 hours of instruction at school both in and outside of the classroom.
The Biodiversity in Habitats Around You unit is part of a series of Science/Math Teaching Units that were developed in classrooms with teacher input at every stage and tested in a variety of schools. The units blend curricular content with educational goals in a way that is meaningful to students, teachers and the school community. This collaborative development-strategy has succeeded in producing math/science units with strong links to nutrition, literacy and social sciences.
