Botany on Your Plate provides students in grades 2-6 with an introduction to the fundamentals of plant structure and function using food items. Through the unit students:
Learn the six basic parts of plants;
Conduct activities to explore the functions of these parts;
Enlarge their understanding of how different parts are used; and
Develop language, math and analytical skills.
This unit consists of six hours of classroom instruction and two hours of garden activities.
The Botany on Your Plate unit is part of a series of Science/Math Teaching Units that were developed in classrooms with teacher input at every stage and tested in a variety of schools. The units blend curricular content with educational goals in a way that is meaningful to students, teachers and the school community. This collaborative development-strategy has succeeded in producing math/science units with strong links to nutrition, literacy and social sciences.
