The Bay Area Earth Science Institute (BAESI) was founded in 1990 for pre-college science teachers in the San Francisco Bay Area. A nonprofit organization supported by San Jose State University, Chevron, and a consortium of other corporate, academic, and government partners, BAESI offers professional development workshops in Earth and space science for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. These disciplines' integrative approach and relevance to everyday life are powerful tools for attracting students, particularly under-represented ones, to the sciences. BAESI synthesizes varied community resources to improve science literacy in the Bay Area.
