Science Interchange is a public service organization that is committed to providing science information to people. Our mission is broad, and so are our methods, ranging from our most "visible" work in radio and Web programming to behind-the-scenes efforts for other science organizations.
We sponsor the production of 90-second radio pieces about scientific discoveries and facts. You can hear about everything from the mating calls of frogs to the environmental rewards of urban forestry in our programs EarthNews and Science in Action. These pieces can be heard on CBS Radio Network affiliates, National Public Radio stations, and independent stations around the country. We are also featured on the Web-based Environmental News Network. Through these venues, we reach a nationwide audience using several forms of media.
An exciting related mission is our Teen Environmental Media Network through which we introduce high school students to print and broadcast journalism with an environmental bent. The teen interns learn how to write text news pieces, interview scientists and research other sources on topics they choose, and step in front of the microphone and record their own pieces for Internet broadcast. Our goal is to give young people environmental reporting experiences that will be useful to them no matter what their goals in life. We want to give students the presence and confidence that comes with learning how to seek out and communicate information.
Science Interchange also endeavors to move scientific information into the public sphere by working with other science and environmental organizations in examining how they interact with their intended audiences. Based upon their goals, we suggest how to reach potential donors and the general public, as well as how to achieve other goals they may have set. We also provide Web assistance to those organizations. |
