The University of California Botanical Garden is located in Strawberry Canyon above the Berkeley campus overlooking the San Francisco Bay. The Garden's 34 acres contain over 13,000 species and varieties of plants from all over the world. Arranged by region of origin, the Garden has outstanding collections of cacti, rhododendrons, Chinese medicinal herbs, Western herbs and California natives. The sloping site offers excellent views of San Francisco Bay. In every season, the Garden abounds with opportunities for learning.
Docents lead tours throughout the year for children and adult groups. The Garden's dedicated and enthusiastic docents complete an intensive 18-week training program presented by Garden, University and local experts. The Garden offers tour groups a rich source of examples in form and function of plants, plant evolution and ecology, ethnobotany and economic plants. The Garden also offers opportunities to discuss conservation and restoration of endangered populations and habitats. Tour groups may wish to focus on aesthetic appreciation and artistic expression inspired by the beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers. |
